APEC Photovoltaic Conference 2008
7~9 October 2008, Taipei

In the SYDNEY APEC LEADERS’ DECLARATION ON CLIMATE CHANGE, ENERGY SECURITY AND CLEAN DEVELOPMENT, the APEC Economic Leaders, agree that economic growth, energy security and climate change are fundamental and interlinked challenges for the APEC region. The APEC Economies committed, through wide-ranging and ambitious actions, to ensuring the energy needs of the economies of the region while addressing the issue of environmental quality and contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

A great challenge for APEC, given the aspirations of 41 per cent of the world’s population in our region, is to chart new pathways for clean and sustainable development.

Photovoltaic (PV) electricity generation system has been deployed as a clean energy. PV technology has shown its great potential to be an alternative way to cut down carbon emission in renewable energy.

APEC Economies area has established the biggest capacity in the world solar cell production. It has shown that APEC Economies has become the most important sectors of supply chain in the solar energy development and related industry. However, the deployment of solar energy as renewable energy source in this area needs more efforts for dissemination.

Some remote and rural areas within APEC Economies are inaccessible to electricity utility. PV should be the right solution for that needs while solar energy will provide cost- effective electricity with less environmental impact.

It has shown that the status of PV industry and installation within APEC economics are quite different from area to area. The incentive program and financial tools depend heavily on economic from each economics. Establishment of a platform to facilitate the cooperation and experience sharing between APEC Economics should be needed.
